Beer goggles?

January 8, 2016

How our perceptions can change overnight! What looks lovely at sundown can look entirely different in the morning light. This morning’s peek at the canvas showed me a horrible adolescent rainbow unicorn New Age mess. In trying to bring flat paint to some approximation of the glory my eyes take in, I’ve resorted to stupid clichés. Argh!! What was I thinking? I’ve given myself permission to stop work on this canvas for now until I can figure out options for fixing it. But I’m very frustrated: I have taken literally thousands of photos I want to paint, but I can’t bear to think they will all come out so flat and dead. How will I ever render the thrilling light my camera captured so effortlessly? Just smearing a rainbow on the canvas won’t do it. I need many more hours in museums and studying all of the images I’ve collected. I also need to learn a lot more about materials to achieve the effects I want to achieve.
