I’m a big fan of Erin Hanson, a young and ferociously talented oil painter. Today I found and watched several video interviews with her, which were alternately thrilling and validating (we are motivated by many similar things!) and depressing (she’s done a painting a week for maybe 20 years; I’ll never catch up!). It also helped me resolve some business questions that have been puzzling me. I really need to bring more force and directness to my drawing -- the lines I’m producing in my current painting are all wavy, expressive but in a kind of creepy, over-emotive way, like a wispy old lady with damp hands who believes in crystals and keeps too many cats. I’m not good drawing with a brush, at least at this scale (18’ x 24”); I need to try other tools.
